Dear Friends
of the Walton County Heritage Museum,
Thanks to
all who helped with our Baggage Room Clean-up on April 12! The
room now looks clean and orderly, so we no longer have to be embarrassed
when people peer through the windows. Thanks to a great turnout
of volunteers, we cleaned the room in a couple of hours. Great
teamwork!
Dr. Brian
Rucker of the University of West Florida entertained us with artifacts
and stories of “Life on the West Florida Frontier”
at the Walton County Heritage Association meeting April 17. We
have a few of his books for sale at the Museum if you missed it.
Congratulations
to Dennis Ray and the members of the DeFuniak Springs Visitors
Bureau for a great “Peddlers Alley” event on May 3!
It was wonderful to see downtown DeFuniak Springs so vibrant on
a Saturday.
Historic
Buildings Update
The owners
of the 1885 historic home in Chipley report that it is still available
for moving. One man who wants to buy it for parts (doors, windows,
etc.) is waiting in the wings, but the owners remain hopeful that
someone will move it in its entirety.
I’m
pleased to report that we were able to help Paul Mixon with the
historic church. It is in Blackman, near Baker, and Jeanette Henderson
and the volunteers at the Baker Block Museum are very familiar
with it. They know some of the people who attended that church,
so they will give Mr. Mixon’s group guidance as to what
it looked like.
Pappy
Neal McCormick Day & Bluegrass Festival – Saturday,
May 31
Please note
we have changed the date of the event to be the last Saturday
in May. We will start in the Museum at 2:00 with talks by the
family and friends of the late Pappy Neal. Music will start at
the Amphitheater across the street at 4:00 and should last until
9:00. Performers will include Tommy McCormick and Dread Clampitt.
We are going
to try something new before and between the performances. The
“History Mystery Box Auction” will give attendees
a chance to bid on items that are more than 50 years old, but
no one will know what they are purchasing until after they win
the auction and open the box. Creatively wrapped packages may
contain anything from an old bottle to a fabulous keepsake. Bidding
for each box will start at $5. If you have something to donate
to the auction, please let me know. This idea came from Phyllis
Pinson of H & M Hot Dog, whose family has such auctions to
raise money for their reunions. Phyllis and her husband Dan will
be on hand to sell food and beverages during the Bluegrass Festival.
We will keep
the Museum open for rest room use until the Bluegrass Festival
is over, so we could use some volunteers that evening. Help in
the Amphitheater will also be appreciated.
I hope to
see you on May 31!
