Alonzo “Lon” W. Hayes, Jr., 77, was born into this world on April 5, 1929 in Chilton County, AL, to Alonzo Hayes and Mary Francis Short Hayes. He passed away on Friday, Dec. 8, 2006.

Hayes grew up farming and repairing autos with his five brothers, Wilbur Curtis, Johnny, Thomas, Donald, and Carl.

Hayes spent 22 years in the Navy, serving on the ships USS Badoeng Strait, USS Frontier and USS Seminole. He was particularly proud of his time at the South Pole during Deep Freeze IV.

Although he was willing and eager to help his friends and neighbors, his greatest joy was his family. He will be missed by his wife of 57 years, Doreen “Kathy”; his children, Bill, Mike, Charles, and Debbie and their spouses, Cathy, Dotty and John; his grandchildren, Billy, Nathaniel, Brandon, Brianne, Abrah, Adrienne, Zach, and Katherine, and their spouses, Jessica, Pauline, Eric, and Mike, and his great-grandchildren, Cameron, Avery and Ethan.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2006 at Barrancas National Cemetery with full military honors.
