Drew Burgess

Drew Burgess of Leonia, Florida, passed away on December 16, 2007 at the home of his daughter in Panama City after a lengthy illness.

Drew Burgess was born on April 15, 1923, in Leonia, Florida, one of 16 children of Ovella and Hiram Burgess. Of those 16 siblings, all except Albert, predeceased him in death. Drew spent his early years and the years from 1968 until his death on the homestead he was born and raised on.

Drew is survived by Juanita, his wife of 64 years, and brother, Albert. Drew is also survived by his three children and their spouses, Donnie & JoAnne Burgess of Tallahassee, FL, David & Donna Kay Burgess of Leonia and Paula & Mike Caswell of Panama City. Drew had seven grandchildren and they are Gregory and Kristina Burgess, Keith Caswell and Staci Joyner, Shannon Riley and Patrick Burgess and Jon Burgess. Drew was also the great-grandfather of eight great-grandchildren.

Drew known affectionately by his grandchildren as “Dumpy,” he was the warmest and gentlest of men. The deep love that he inspired in all his family members was a joy to behold. Drew loved his family and the land he was born on. Nothing brought him greater pleasure than to work in his garden and on his land and share the produce with all who cared to partake. Drew may best be remembered by his humility. He was a modest man in a world where there are few such men. His place in the lives of those who loved him and held him dear is truly irreplaceable.
