Richard Andrew Thornton

Richard Andrew Thornton, 64, of Mossy Head, FL, passed away Aug. 23, 2006 at his residence. He was born Aug. 29, 1941 in Montgomery, AL to George and Willie Davis Thornton.

Thornton had been a resident of Mossy Head for the past 23 years. He was Baptist by faith. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War having served two tours in Vietnam. He retired from the United States Air Force with 20 years of service as a staff sergeant. He received an Air Force Commendation Medal, Outstanding Unit Award with one Oak Leaf Clusters, Good Conduct Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, and Longevity Service Award with four Oak Leaf Clusters.

Thornton was predeceased by his father and mother, and one sister, Elaine Bray.

Thornton is survived by his wife of 33 years, Roberta M. Thornton of Mossy Head, FL; three sons, Chris Thornton and wife, Claudia, of Ft. Riley, KS, Richard Bass and wife, Doreen, of Ft. Gordon, GA, and Joseph Bass and wife, Heather, of Prosperity, FL; four daughters, Cindy Thornton Mhire and husband, Darrel, of Lafayette, LA, Tina Ward and husband, Steven, of Shreveport, LA, Tonya McCain and husband, John, of Navarre, FL, and Sonja Jane Brown of Mossy Head; one sister, Beverly Abbott, of Woodstock, GA; 17 grandchildren and four great- grandchildren.

Graveside services were conducted Saturday, Aug. 26, 2006, at Crowder Chapel Cemetery, with military honors at graveside.
