Rodney Morris Hughes

Rodney Morris Hughes, 58, a resident of Freeport, FL, and formerly of Dothan, AL, died Monday, Jan. 2, 2006, at his residence in Freeport.

Hughes was born and reared in Dothan. He was a graduate of Dothan High School and the University of South Alabama and also received a master’s degree from the University of Alabama.

In earlier years, Hughes served as an instructor with the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind in Talladega. For the past seven years, Hughes was employed with the state of Florida as a human resource officer.

He was a past president of both Rotary International in DeFuniak Springs and Caring and Sharing in DeFuniak Springs. Hughes was a former sports announcer for W.Z.E.P. radio station in DeFuniak Springs and was known as “Rocket Rod”.

He was a former member of the Southside Baptist Church in Dothan. Hughes was preceded in death by his father, William Morris Hughes.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Sheila Ann Hughes, Freeport; two daughters, Lydia Courtney Hughes; Kathleen Tucker Hughes; son, John Chessler Hughes, all of Mobile, AL; stepson, Matt Mostyn, Robertsdale, AL; Mother, Kathleen Smith Hughes, Dothan; two brothers, William Patrick Hughes and wife, Denise Hughes, Acworth, GA; Joseph Brian Hughes and wife, Janet Hughes, Headland, AL.

A memorial service was held Thursday, Jan. 5, 2006, in the First Baptist Church Chapel in Dothan, with Rev. Bob Gross officiating. A eulogy will be given by Art Dees.
