George Marvin Bishop, Jr., age 54, of U. S. Highway 90 east, died Tuesday, February 23.
He was currently serving his second term as county commissioner and was also serving as Chairman of the Board as well as State Association of County Commissioners and director of the Northwest Florida Development Council.
He was a native and lifelong resident of Walton County, the owner and operator of Bishop Timber Co. until 1969; a veteran of World War II; and a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Being very active in civic work since 1948, Mr. Bishop received the Good Government Award in 1969, presented by the Jaycees of Walton County.
Mr. Bishop served one year as District Governor of Lions International representing this district on the council of Governors for the state of Florida. He has also held all offices in DeFuniak Springs Lions Club.
He was a past president of Walton County Chamber of Commerce and had served several years on the board of directors.
Mr. Bishop was appointed by Governor Kirk as a delegate to the 1969 National Rivers and Harbor Congress Convention in Washington. He organized the County Council of Parents and Teachers Association and served two years as the Council President for Walton County.
Survivors include his wife, Muriel Bishop; three daughters, Mrs. Joyce Williams of Tallahassee, Miss Judi Bishop and Miss Sandra Bishop, both of DeFuniak Springs; one brother, Ernest Bishop, of Argyle, Florida.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday in Comander Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Cecil Bradley and the Rev. Braxton McCurley officiating.
