Glyndol Commander

Glyndol Commander, 83, widow of Jesse Coy Commander, passed away Monday, January 16, 2006, in Chautauqua Health Care Center. She was born June 5, 1922, the daughter of Ray and Vircey Miles Bedsole.

During Glyndol’s childhood she enjoyed playing baseball with the boys in Samson and helping her father at his auto mechanic shop. After moving to Sunnybrook Farm in Florida, Glyndol graduated with honors from Leonia High School. She went on to college at Florida College for Women (FSU) and then she taught fourth grade in Jay, FL. Glyndol was married to Coy Commander for 48 years and served as the assistant manager to him at the West Florida Farmer’s Coop for over 30 years. She was an active member of the Ponce de Leon and DeFuniak Springs Order of the Eastern Star and served as the Grand Organist of Florida. After retiring she returned to college and took creative writing courses because of her love for knowledge and enjoyment in writing poetry and short stories.

Among survivors are her sons, James Rayford Commander and wife, Carolyn, of DeFuniak Springs, Dr. Jonathan Coy Commander and wife, Julie, of Auburn, AL; her daughter, Janice Andrews, of Darlington, FL; her grandchildren, Jeremy Commander, Rogelyn, Josh, Thomas, David and Jessica Andrews, Jennifer, Jared and Joy Commander; her sisters, Ann Wilson and husband, Paul, of Enterprise, AL and Mary Andrews and husband, Buddy, of Pensacola, FL. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Floral arrangements are being accepted or memorials may be made in Commander’s memory to favorite charities. A time of visitation will be Thursday, January 19, 2006 from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services will be Friday, January 20, 2006 at 10 a.m. in Jerry Evans Chapel. Burial will follow in New Ponce de Leon Cemetery.
