Thelma Orene Suggs Melvin

Mrs. Thelma Melvin, age 94, of Freeport passed away May 4, 2008. She was born July 11, 1913, in Portland, Florida, to Benjamin and Emma Harvard Suggs.

Mrs. Melvin had been a lifelong resident of Walton County. She was Baptist by faith and a member of the First Baptist Church of Freeport, having taught Sunday School for over sixty years, serving her church and the Lord Jesus Christ faithfully. She was the lunchroom manager at the Freeport School before retiring. She also owned and operated Thelma’s Florist in Freeport for thirty-five years with her husband. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter #281 Freeport, Florida, having served as Worthy Matron Chaplain and Marshall.

Mrs. Melvin was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Dan Melvin of 65 years, one brother Floyd Suggs Sr., four sisters Haley Gibson, Bama McLean, Clara Godwin and Claudia Howard.

Mrs. Melvin is survived by her daughter Joyce Melvin Griffin and husband Bob of Valparaiso, Florida, two grandsons Robert J. Griffin Jr and wife Terri of Destin, Florida and Danny Griffin of Valparaiso, Florida, one granddaughter Debra Ann Grube and husband David of Hudsonville, Michigan, four great-grandchildren Colten Griffin of Valparaiso, Florida, Nathan, Brent and Taylor Grube of Hudsonville, Michigan. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation services will be conducted at 6:00~8:00 PM, Wednesday, May 7, 2008, at Clary-Glenn Freeport Chapel Funeral Home, 150 East Highway 20, Freeport, Florida 32439.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 AM, Thursday, May 8, 2008, at First Baptist Church of Freeport, with Reverends Green Harrell and Ken Coots officiating.

Those asked to serve as pallbearers are Bobby Linton, Billy Linton, Mickey Marse, Aubrey Rentz, Tony Broxton and Benny Godwin. Honorary pallbearer [is] Morris Helmes.

Burial will follow in the Hatcher Cemetery.
